Grails 1.1 beta, the things I’m looking forward to…

Posted by: on Dec 2, 2008 | 5 Comments

Grails 1.1 beta 1 is out, and the release notes give a nice snapshot of some of the sweet new features coming.

In particular I’m looking forward to using:

  • read-only GORM objects
  • the new data binding mechanism that lets you limit the properties bound without using the clunky excludes list of bindData (hey… I can call it clunky, it was my creation!).
  • global plugins and automatic download/install of plugins

There will be more treats in store before it hits RC too, I’m sure.

Is this version any lighter? Wow the existing version includes Xalan, Xerces; why not just use JAXP?

I see lots of nice features but not enough bug fixes. Grails is a damned mine field when it comes to bugs and these bugs keep it from being a compelling product for me. Unfortunately I expect even more bugs along with all of the new features.

Nanreh – what bugs are you seeing? Have you JIRA’d them?
Nobody likes bugs… and contributions are always welcome!

    Laker2000 – I will ask Graeme about this, I’m sure there’s a concrete reason.

Marc…. dude. Thanks so much for the screencast. I am just getting started with groovy and grails. keep it up! Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that it is great when developers go the extra mile and do screencasts. I plan on using groovy and grails along with my current Flex development.
